Hanwella, Colombo
Hanwella, a town rich in history and natural beauty, lies approximately 30 kilometres from Colombo, Sri Lanka's bustling capital. Nestled on the banks of the Kelani River, this town is a tranquil retreat from the urban chaos, offering both residents and visitors a serene environment complemented by lush landscapes, rubber plantations, and significant water bodies like the Labugama and Kalatuwawa reservoirs. These elements not only add to Hanwella's picturesque setting but also play a crucial role in supplying water to nearby regions.
Historically, Hanwella has been a significant locale, partly due to its strategic positioning on the Colombo-Ratnapura main road. This facilitated its role in the ancient Seethawaka kingdom and made it a site of numerous battles between Portuguese soldiers and Sinhalese troops. The remnants of these encounters and the influence of colonial architecture contribute to the town's unique character. Before the construction of the Colombo-Kandy highway by the British, Hanwella served as a primary route to Kandy and the country's interior, highlighting its importance as a transportation hub throughout history.
Today, Hanwella is witnessing rapid urbanisation, with the establishment of several factories and the introduction of recreational facilities like the "Leisure World" theme park, indicating a shift towards becoming a more modern town while still retaining its historical roots and natural charm. The town is divided by both the High Level and Low Level roads, which intersect here, further emphasising its role as a critical junction for travel within the Western Province.
The geographical features of Hanwella, including its waterfalls, lush green hills, and the Kelani River, make it an attractive destination for nature lovers and those seeking a peaceful escape. Meanwhile, its growing urbanisation introduces a dynamic aspect to the town, blending the old with the new and inviting a broader demographic to explore all that Hanwella has to offer.
