Galewela is a bustling town located in the Matale District of the Central Province, Sri Lanka. Positioned along the Ambepussa-Trincomalee A6 road, Galewela is known for its strategic location, connecting various parts of the island. The town is situated at an elevation of 209 metres (686 feet) above sea level and is characterised by its lush greenery and vibrant agricultural activities. Galewela has a diverse population of over 70,000 people, primarily consisting of Sinhala Buddhists, with a significant Muslim community and smaller groups of Hindus and Roman Catholics.
Historically, Galewela is believed to have been developed under the supervision of King Kashyapa, who cultivated the fertile lands around Sigiriya. The name "Galewela" is derived from the Sinhalese words "Welegala," meaning a rock in the paddy field, reflecting the area's agricultural roots. Today, Galewela continues to thrive as a significant agricultural hub, contributing to the region's economy through its extensive paddy fields and other crops.
