Weeraketiya is a small but significant town in the Hambantota District of Sri Lanka’s Southern Province. Located inland from the southern coastline, Weeraketiya is known for its agricultural productivity, peaceful village life, and its role as a service and administrative center for surrounding rural areas. The town falls under the Tangalle electorate and serves as a sub-regional hub connecting nearby towns such as Beliatta, Walasmulla, Middeniya, and Okewela.
Historically rooted in agriculture and irrigation-based farming, Weeraketiya benefits from the Weeraketiya Wewa (reservoir), which supports extensive paddy cultivation, vegetable farming, and home gardening. The town has a functional level of public infrastructure, including schools, hospitals, banks, government offices, and cooperative shops, making it a convenient location for local residents in a largely agrarian region.
While not a commercial hotspot, Weeraketiya holds strategic value due to its central location and connectivity to larger towns and upcoming infrastructure corridors, such as the Southern Expressway via nearby Beliatta. Affordable land prices and low cost of living make it attractive for those interested in farming, semi-urban housing, or investing in real estate with rural charm.
