Angunakolapelessa is a rural town located in the Hambantota District of Sri Lanka’s Southern Province. Set inland from the coastal cities of the south, this town lies along the B35 road, connecting Tangalle, Sooriyawewa, and Hambantota, positioning it as an important agrarian hub in the region. Known for its fertile plains, abundant paddy fields, and coconut cultivation, Angunakolapelessa thrives on agriculture and local trade.
Though traditionally a farming town, Angunakolapelessa has been experiencing modest development due to its proximity to national infrastructure projects such as the Southern Expressway, Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport, and the Magampura Mahinda Rajapaksa Port in Hambantota. These developments have improved road access and prompted growing interest in residential land and small-scale investment.
The community is largely Sinhalese and predominantly Buddhist, with a strong social structure built around temples, schools, and local cooperatives. Real estate in Angunakolapelessa remains affordable, with availability of agricultural lands, residential plots, and roadside commercial spaces, making it attractive for long-term agricultural and residential development.
