Dehiaththakandiya, Ampara
Dehiaththakandiya is a vibrant agricultural township located in the Ampara District of Sri Lanka’s Eastern Province, bordering the North Central and Uva Provinces. Strategically placed near the Maduru Oya National Park and the Mahaweli Development zones, it is one of the key towns in the Mahaweli 'C' Zone, which was established under Sri Lanka’s largest irrigation and settlement project.
Known for its productive farmlands, irrigation infrastructure, and community-focused rural life, Dehiaththakandiya has grown significantly since the 1980s, when it was populated by settlers under the Mahaweli Authority’s resettlement scheme. Today, it continues to thrive as a rice, maize, and banana farming hub, supported by extensive canal systems and tanks like the Maduru Oya Reservoir.
The area has also seen increasing attention due to its eco-tourism potential, thanks to its proximity to the Maduru Oya National Park, and a growing population drawn by its affordable land, educational institutions, and small-town amenities.
