Wariyapola, Kurunegala

Wariyapola is a notable town located in the Kurunegala District of Sri Lanka's North Western Province. Positioned approximately 94 metres above sea level, Wariyapola is about 20 kilometres from Kurunegala and approximately 100 kilometres from Colombo. The town is historically significant due to Wariyapola Sri Sumangala Thero, who famously replaced the Union Jack with the Sinhalese lion flag in 1815, marking an important event in Sri Lanka's history. Wariyapola is also known for its meaning in Sinhalese, "place for plane landing," which is linked to ancient legends about King Ravana's chariot.
