Lunugamwehera, Hambantota
Lunugamwehera is a rural town in the Hambantota District of Sri Lanka’s Southern Province, known for its agricultural landscape, wildlife proximity, and the prominent Lunugamwehera Reservoir. The town is part of the Dry Zone, and its development has historically been shaped by irrigation-based farming and large-scale water projects. With the Lunugamwehera National Park nearby and its location along the route to several southern tourist destinations, the area is beginning to attract low-impact tourism and agricultural investments.
Though not heavily urbanized, Lunugamwehera is equipped with basic amenities and infrastructure, mainly centered around local livelihoods and farming support. The Lunugamwehera Irrigation Project (part of the broader Kirindi Oya scheme) transformed the region into a viable agricultural zone, enabling the cultivation of paddy, maize, and vegetables.
Today, Lunugamwehera continues to function primarily as a farming and conservation area, offering opportunities for eco-tourism, agribusiness, and nature-centric development. Real estate here is affordable, especially for those interested in agricultural lands or nature-based hospitality ventures.
