Lunugala, Badulla
Lunugala is a picturesque, highland town located in the Badulla District of Sri Lanka’s Uva Province. Surrounded by misty hills, tea estates, and dense forest reserves, Lunugala is known for its cool climate, agricultural economy, and tranquil way of life. It lies around 60 km from Badulla town and 50 km from Ampara, acting as a transitional zone between the central highlands and the eastern lowlands of the island.
The town’s economy and lifestyle are closely tied to plantation agriculture, particularly tea, pepper, cardamom, and vegetable cultivation. Many residents are employed in the estate sector, while others engage in small-scale farming and trade. Lunugala is home to a multi-ethnic community, with significant Sinhala, Tamil, and Muslim populations, contributing to its cultural diversity.
Though still developing in terms of urban infrastructure, Lunugala has access to schools, hospitals, local markets, and cooperative stores. The area’s clean environment, scenic views, and affordable land prices make it ideal for agriculture, eco-tourism, and rural residential living.
