Okewela is a rural town located in the Hambantota District of Sri Lanka’s Southern Province, falling under the Weeraketiya Divisional Secretariat Division. It is primarily known for its agricultural economy, serene village environment, and traditional southern charm. Nestled amidst lush greenery and low-lying hills, Okewela offers a peaceful lifestyle away from the hustle of urban centers, yet retains functional connectivity to nearby towns like Weeraketiya, Beliatta, and Tangalle.
This area is deeply rooted in agriculture, particularly paddy cultivation, vegetable farming, and home gardening, supported by small irrigation tanks and favorable soil conditions. The lifestyle here is modest but stable, with a strong focus on family, religion, and self-sufficiency. While Okewela lacks urban-level amenities, it is gradually improving its infrastructure with better road networks and public services.
Due to its affordability and proximity to key towns and development corridors in the south, Okewela is slowly emerging as a location of interest for low-cost residential development and small-scale agri-investments.
